Weare was first granted by Massachusetts lawmakers in 1735 after Captain William Raymond's men, who were soldiers in the Canadian wars, petitioned. Back then, it was known as Beverly-Canada (after the men's hometown of Beverly, Massachusetts) and Hale's Town. In 1748, Ichabod Robie, Meshech Weare and other Hampton Falls residents petitioned for township near the Amoskeag, which was granted by the Masonian Proprietors. Then it was known as Robies-town and Weare's-town before it was officially incorporated as Weare in 1764. The name is in honor of Colonel Meshech Weare, who served as the first president of New Hampshire from 1776 to 1785. |
